A Brief Explanation of Dental Specialties
General Dentistry
General Dentists treat patients of all ages and are responsible for your complete oral health. They provide a wide range of procedures from crowns and bridges to TMJ/TMD therapy. General Dentists account for the majority of dental professionals in the United States and Canada.
To obtain their D.D.S. or D.M.D. degree dentists must complete three or more years of undergraduate education in addition to four years of dental school. To become licensed to practice in their state, they must pass an examination after graduating.
Your general dentist is your primary dental care provider. If you need a specialized procedure they may refer you a dental specialist. Your general dentist will coordinate your treatment to ensure you get the best care possible.
